CertHE vs FdA Business Management: Which Is Right?

If you're looking to study Business Management at OLC Europe, you'll quickly come across two qualifications that sit close together on the academic ladder: the CertHE Business Management (Level 4) and the FdA Business Management (Level 5). 

They are not competing options. They are consecutive stages of the same progression route — one that leads, step by step, to a full BA (Hons) Business Management degree. The question isn't really which is better. The question is: which one is the right entry point for you right now?

What Is the CertHE Business Management?

The CertHE Business Management at OLC Europe is a Level 4 qualification — the first year of higher education. It is a one-year, full-time programme (three days a week), delivered in partnership with NCG and awarded as a CertHE Business Management from NCG. 

The programme contains 7 modules in total and requires a minimum of ten hours of independent study per week alongside taught sessions. Each module is designed with direct links to industry and employers, mapping the programme to the skills needed in real business management environments. 

The overall aim is to develop work-ready graduates with a strong understanding of organisations, the business environments in which they operate, and the principles of effective management — while also providing a platform for further study. 

Skills developed on the CertHE include:

• Collaborative teamwork and leadership 
• Planning and time management 
• Self-awareness and self-management 
• Enterprise and entrepreneurial awareness 

Tuition fee: £9,790 per year (subject to parliamentary procedure). Tuition Fee Loans from Student Finance England are available, repayable only once earnings exceed £25,000 per year. 

What Is the FdA Business Management?

The FdA Business Management at OLC Europe is a Level 5 qualification — equivalent to two years of higher education. It is a Foundation Degree in Arts, also delivered in partnership with NCG. 

Where the CertHE establishes the foundations of business management thinking, the FdA builds on them. At Level 5 you are working at a greater depth of analysis, engaging with more complex business problems, and developing the kind of strategic and critical thinking that employers associate with mid-level management capability. 

The FdA is the middle stage of the three-step business management progression at OLC Europe — positioned between the CertHE at Level 4 and the BA (Hons) Top-Up at Level 6. Completing the FdA positions you directly for the BA (Hons) Business Management Top-Up. 

The Direct Comparison

Entry Requirements: Where You Start Depends on What You Hold

To enter the CertHE Business Management

You must be over 18 and hold one of the following: 

• BTEC National Certificate or Diploma in Business-related studies 
• NVQ Level 3 qualification in an appropriate vocational area, or A-Level equivalent 
• Completion of OLC Europe's Foundation Year in Business Management 

You must also hold GCSE Maths and English at Grade C/4 or above, or equivalent Level 2 Numeracy and Literacy qualifications. 

Mature students with relevant work experience are welcome to apply. OLC Europe considers professional background as part of the admissions process for applicants who may not hold formal Level 3 academic qualifications. If this applies to you, contact the admissions team to discuss your situation before applying. 

If you don't yet hold Level 3 qualifications, the CertHE Business Management with Foundation Year adds a preparatory foundation year before Level 4 — keeping all the same progression options open. 

To enter the FdA Business Management

Entry to the FdA requires successful completion of the CertHE Business Management or an equivalent Level 4 qualification in a relevant subject. If you have completed your CertHE at OLC Europe, progression onto the FdA is a direct continuation — no reapplication from scratch, no gap. 

If you completed a Level 4 qualification elsewhere, OLC Europe will assess your qualification for equivalency. Contact the team to confirm before applying. 

Which One Is Right for You?

Start with the CertHE if:

You are entering higher education for the first time and hold Level 3 qualifications (BTEC, NVQ, or A-Levels) in a relevant subject. You want a structured, supported introduction to degree-level business study before committing to a longer programme. You are a mature student with relevant business or management work experience but without formal higher education qualifications. You want to use the CertHE to test whether business management study at this level is the right direction before progressing. 

The CertHE is designed to be the entry point — it builds the academic habits, the analytical framework, and the subject knowledge that makes everything above it more achievable. 

Start with the FdA if:

You already hold a CertHE Business Management or an equivalent Level 4 qualification from another institution. Your existing qualifications have been assessed as equivalent to Level 4 in a relevant business subject. You have completed the CertHE at OLC Europe and are continuing to the next stage. 

The FdA is not an alternative to the CertHE for someone starting from Level 3. It is the continuation. You cannot skip Level 4 and enter at Level 5 without holding a relevant Level 4 equivalent. 

The Full Progression Route at OLC Europe

Both qualifications sit within a single, clearly mapped progression pathway: 

Foundation Year (Level 3) — optional, for those below Level 3 entry ↓ CertHE Business Management (Level 4) ↓ FdA Business Management (Level 5) ↓ BA (Hons) Business Management Top-Up (Level 6)

What's Included in Your Tuition

Both the CertHE and FdA tuition fees cover: lectures, seminars, tutorials and 1-to-1 support; compulsory field trips; library and computer access; support and wellbeing services; course administration; and the graduation ceremony. 

Items not covered include textbooks, printing, personal laptops, and travel expenses. Student Finance England Tuition Fee Loans are available for both programmes. 

Evening Classes — September 2026 Intake

From September 2026, OLC Europe is offering evening classes from 5pm to 9pm at Bolton and Oldham campuses for both Business Management and Health courses at Level 3 through Level 6. This makes both the CertHE and FdA accessible to working adults who cannot attend during standard daytime hours.
