What Is a Health and Social Care Top-Up Degree?

The BA (Hons) Integrated Health, Social Care and Wellbeing (Top-Up) at OLC Europe is a Level 6 qualification. Successful completion leads to the award of BA (Hons) Integrated Health, Social Care and Wellbeing from NCG. 

The programme aims to provide students with the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities needed to be an effective practitioner in a variety of health and social care settings. 

It is one year, full-time. You enter at Level 6 — the final year of a degree — having already completed Levels 4 and 5 through your previous study. The top-up year covers advanced modules including Research Theory and Practice, health policy, community strategies, care leadership, and a final dissertation. 

A 2:2 Honours level pass will allow you entry onto a range of related Postgraduate or Masters degree programmes, including Social Care, Wellbeing, Occupational Therapy and Health Professions. OLC Europe now also offers the MSc Leadership in Health and Social Care — a direct postgraduate step for those who want to continue. 

Who Is Eligible? The Core Entry Requirement

This top-up degree is for individuals who have completed a foundation degree or an equivalent Level 5 qualification in a related field. 

In plain terms: if you hold a relevant Level 5 qualification in health, social care, nursing, or a closely related subject, you are the target applicant for this programme. 

Accepted qualifications at Level 5 include: 

• FdA (Foundation Degree in Arts) in Health, Social Care, or Wellbeing — including OLC Europe's own FdA Integrated Health, Social Care and Wellbeing 

• BTEC Higher National Diploma (HND) in a health-related field 

• An equivalent Level 5 qualification in a related field 

If you completed your Level 5 at OLC Europe, progression onto the top-up is a direct, mapped continuation. If you completed your Level 5 elsewhere, OLC Europe will assess your qualification for equivalency — contact the admissions team to confirm before applying. 

What If You Don't Have A-Levels?

The programme welcomes students from diverse backgrounds, including those without traditional qualifications. 

A-Levels are not required for entry to a health and social care top-up degree. What matters is your Level 5 qualification — not what you studied at secondary school. This is a significant point for mature students, career changers, and people who entered health and social care through vocational rather than academic routes. 

If you have worked in care, nursing, community support, or a related role and have built qualifications alongside that work — including NVQs, BTECs, or healthcare diplomas — those qualifications may constitute the Level 5 entry requirement. 

GCSE Maths and English at Grade C/4 or equivalent Level 2 Numeracy and Literacy qualifications are also required. If these are not held formally, contact OLC Europe directly — equivalent evidence of numeracy and literacy may be considered.

OLC Europe does not only offer the top-up. The full progression pathway from Level 3 through to BA (Hons) is available within a single, structured route:

• Holding Level 3 qualifications → CertHE Integrated Health, Social Care and Wellbeing 

• Holding Level 4 CertHE → FdA Integrated Health, Social Care and Wellbeing 

• Holding Level 5 FdA or equivalent → BA (Hons) Top-Up directly

For the CertHE entry point, you must be over 18 years old and have one of the following: BTEC National Certificate/Diploma in Health related studies; NVQ Level 3 qualification in appropriate vocational area or A-Level equivalent.
